SmoredBoard APO Driver is now out!

What is an APO Driver?

An Audio Processing Object edits your microphone's audio at a driver level before any apps get to read it. They were intended for DSP effects (what the effects we use on sounds and for voice changers in the SmoredBoard are called) but in our use case, instead of using the APO Driver to apply reverb, we mix SmoredBoard sounds onto your mic directly (or when using a voice changer, replace the audio altogether). You've probably never heard of an APO Driver before, but they are actually used all the time by audio device manufacturers to make their mics, or headphones sound better, and in some cases give you more control over the device.

Why use it?

1: It makes using the SmoredBoard way easier! The APO Driver removes the need for any virtual audio devices, so no more CABLE Output or anything! Just open the SmoredBoard, and any sounds you play will be added directly onto your mic.

2: It reduces latency SIGNIFICANTLY. For example, if you aren't using a voice changer, and don't have any mic adjustments on (like background noise reduction for example) the APO driver simply adds any sound audio directly onto the mic, which means your voice has 0 additional latency. If you are using a voice changer, you can expect an average of 150ms less latency.

Are there downsides?

Ideally no, but the APO Driver is still new and in beta, so you might experience issues when using it. I've done lots of work testing the driver on a variety of machines and use cases, and personally use it every day without issue, but that doesn't mean there won't be issues with it. This is why the driver (for now) is opt-in, instead of the default. If you do experience any issues with it, or have any questions please reach out to support@smoredboard.com
